What Great Leaders Do

Those who know me know that I am a lifelong fan of Liverpool Football Club - they were mentioned in my wedding vows, we went to watch a game there for our babymoon, and I’m up several times a season to watch their 4:30 am PT Saturday morning matches.

This summer. Jurgen Klopp stepped down as the manager of Liverpool. Appointed in 2015, Klopp revitalized a struggling Liverpool side, instilling a winning mentality and a cohesive team spirit.

His leadership saw Liverpool clinch their sixth Champions League title in 2019, followed by their long-awaited Premier League triumph in 2020, ending a 30-year drought. He inspired and changed the City in the 9 years he was in charge.

Klopp’s approach to leadership combines tactical acumen with emotional intelligence. He emphasizes a high-pressing style of play, demanding physical fitness and mental resilience from his players.

However, it's his ability to inspire and connect with his team and the fans that truly sets him apart. Klopp’s charisma and genuine passion have endeared him to the Liverpool faithful, fostering a strong sense of unity and loyalty within the club.

At his last game there was a farewell celebration at the end of the game. In his final speech to the fans, he orchestrated a memorable moment by leading the audience in singing the name of the incoming manager.

Does that ever happen? That the leader of an organization deflects his adulation to help the next person coming in to feel more welcome! It epitomizes the man and what great leadership is.
